Membrane Technology for
Post-Combustion Carbon Capture from Coal-Fired Power Plants

- Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems benefit from economies of large scale production.
- RO systems have comparable membrane areas and plant sizes to membrane CO2 capture systems.
- Low membrane costs (<$50/m2) can be potentially achieved at large scales.
Since commercial reverse osmosis systems (which have comparable membrane areas
and plant sizes to that of membrane CO2 capture systems) have already been built for
less than 50 dollars per m2, it is reasonable to anticipate that these costs will decrease
significantly if the membranes are produced on a larger scale.
The reduced production costs observed in the case for the reverse osmosis system
suggests that membrane CO2 capture systems should also benefit from economies of
large-scale production. (Baker et al 2009)
