INFLUENCE OF WATER VAPOR ON CO2/N2 TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF POLYMER MEMBRANE

  • H2O-induced plasticization”: Typically, water swells the polymer matrix, which results in an increase of the gas diffusivity by amplifying the inter-segmental movement of polymer chains.
  • However, the water vapor also influences the rate of transport of other gas particles besides CO2, which affects the overall component percentage of the gas species in the permeate.
  • Therefore, the overall effects of water vapor is complex and it is not clear to determine which factor is the most contributing one.
  • Water molecules also may occupy the adsorption sites so that the other gases cannot occupy them.
  • Due to the strong hydrogen bonds, the water molecules tend to cluster, which may amplify the effect of swelling or produce additional tortuosity for gas transport.
