Membrane Technology for
Post-Combustion Carbon Capture from Coal-Fired Power Plants
Group 2: Tim Becker, Hye-In Son, Angel Asante, Nadeeka Karunaratne
EXPERIMENT DESIGN
- Mainly the rubbery Polyactive® was investigated since its CO2/N2/H2O gas permeation data were known.
- A PVAm/PVA facilitated transport membrane and a TR-PBI glassy polymer membrane also were investigated for variation and comparison.
- The experiment was conducted at the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) power plant.
- The hard coal grade “Klein Kopje” was utilized.
- The net power generation was 1322kWh electricity/metric ton CO2.
- The CO2 emission was 757 g CO2/kWh electricity.
- The flue gas 50 Celsius degree and 1 atm, which was cooled down to 30 Celsius degree for the purpose of this study.
- Parameters:
Different operational modes
- Vacuum on the permeate side
- Compression on the feed side
- Combination of the two above
Different feed to permeate pressure ratios
- Feed: 1 atm, permeate: 100, 125, 250 mbar (ratios: 10, 8, 4, respectively)
- also, for each pressure ratio, different membrane areas were investigated.
